Insights, tips and learning resources for students and parents

Hindi is an important subject in the ICSE, CBSE and State Board curriculum and strong writing skills can make a big difference in a student’s performance. Over the years, I have seen many capable students lose marks in Hindi not because they lack knowledge but because their writing is unclear, poorly structured or filled with small grammatical mistakes.
In my years of teaching ICSE students, I have often noticed that many students understand the lesson well but still lose marks because their answers are not clearly written or properly organised.
The good news is that Hindi writing skills improve steadily with the right guidance and regular practice. With a few simple habits, students from Grades 7–10 can become more confident and effective writers.
Let us look at some practical ways to strengthen Hindi writing skills.
1. Read Good Hindi Regularly
Reading is one of the most effective ways to improve writing. When students read good Hindi, they naturally learn how sentences are formed, how ideas are expressed, and how vocabulary is used.
Students can read:
- Short stories from their Hindi textbook
- Simple Hindi newspapers or magazines
- Age-appropriate Hindi books
Even reading for 10–15 minutes daily can make a noticeable difference. It helps students understand sentence flow, improves vocabulary, and develops a natural feel for the language.
2. Practice Writing Every Week
Writing improves only with practice. Just like mathematics or sports, regular effort is necessary.
Students should practice writing:
- Short paragraphs
- Letters (formal and informal)
- Essays
- Story writing
At first, the writing may not be perfect. That is completely normal. The goal is to practice expressing thoughts clearly in Hindi.
Parents can encourage their children to write one short piece every week. Even writing a small paragraph regularly helps students build confidence and develop a habit of writing.
3. Focus on Basic Grammar
Many students lose marks due to small grammar errors. A clear understanding of basic grammar helps students write more accurate and meaningful sentences.
Students should revise important topics such as:
- संज्ञा (Noun)
- सर्वनाम (Pronoun)
- विशेषण (Adjective)
- क्रिया (Verb)
- लिंग और वचन
When grammar concepts are clear, students are able to form better sentences and avoid common mistakes during exams.
4. Build a Strong Vocabulary
A good vocabulary helps students express their ideas more effectively. When students know a wider range of words, their writing becomes richer and more interesting.
Students can improve vocabulary by:
- Noting down new words while reading
- Learning a few new words every week
- Trying to use those words in their writing
However, students should remember that writing is not about using very difficult words. The aim is to express ideas clearly and correctly.
5. Learn the Proper Format for Writing
In ICSE examinations, students are expected to follow proper formats for different types of writing.
For example:
- Letter writing
- Essay writing
- Story writing
- Dialogue writing
Sometimes students know the answer but still lose marks because the format is incorrect. Practicing the correct format helps students present their answers in a clear and organised way.
A good answer usually includes:
- A clear introduction
- Proper paragraphs
- Logical flow of ideas
- A suitable conclusion
When the structure is clear, the answer becomes easier for the examiner to read and understand.
6. Review and Correct Your Writing
After completing a piece of writing, students should always take a few minutes to review their work.
While checking, they can look for:
- Spelling mistakes
- Missing matras
- Grammar errors
- Incomplete sentences
This simple habit can help students avoid losing easy marks in exams. Careful checking also helps them learn from their mistakes.
7. Get Proper Feedback
One of the most effective ways to improve writing is through feedback from a teacher.
A teacher can guide students by pointing out:
- Grammar mistakes
- Sentence construction errors
- Areas where ideas can be expressed more clearly
With regular feedback, students gradually understand their weaknesses and improve their writing style.
A Small Message for Parents
Parents sometimes feel that helping children in Hindi can be difficult, especially when they are more comfortable with English. However even small encouragement from parents can make a big difference.
You can support your child by:
- Encouraging regular Hindi reading
- Asking them to practice short writing tasks
- Appreciating their effort and progress
When students feel supported at home, they become more confident and motivated to improve.
Conclusion
Improving Hindi writing skills takes time, patience and consistent practice. When students develop the habit of reading regularly, writing frequently and learning from their mistakes, their confidence naturally grows.
With encouragement from parents and guidance from teachers, every student can gradually become a stronger and more confident Hindi writer and perform well in ICSE examinations.
